National law firm Johnson Winter Slattery has appointed a mergers and acquisitions and private equity partner from BigLaw firm Baker McKenzie.
Liam Hickey (pictured) has joined Johnson Winter Slattery (JWS) as a partner within its M&A and private equity/venture capital teams and will be based in the firm’s Melbourne office.
Before joining the national law firm, Hickey served as a partner in the corporate group at global firm Baker McKenzie, a role he held for close to four years.
With close to two decades of experience, Hickey brings experience advising a range of institutional investors, including private equity and venture capital funds, superannuation and pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and global asset managers.
In a statement, JWS shared how his work centres on complex private capital transactions, including leveraged buyouts, growth equity and venture capital investments, as well as minority stake acquisitions.
Jeremy Davis, managing partner at JWS, emphasised that Hickey’s market-leading reputation and US experience make him ideally placed to guide inbound private equity and venture capital deals, further boosting the firm’s strength in complex M&A.
“Liam has an outstanding reputation in the market as a high-quality deal lawyer. Given his time in the US, Liam is well placed to guide US-based private equity and venture capital funds on their investments into Australia,” Davis said.
“His appointment will deepen the strength of our M&A/PE practice, which is known for handling complex inbound transactions, particularly in the tech space.”
Speaking about his new role, Hickey expressed his excitement at joining the firm and said he was drawn to its expertise in complex private equity and venture capital transactions, particularly those involving cross-border deals.
“I am excited to be joining JWS and look forward to working with the firm’s large and highly regarded private capital team,” Hickey said.
“I was drawn to the firm’s focus and expertise on advising investment funds on complex private equity and venture capital transactions, particularly those involving a cross-border element.”
