Firms: McCullough Robertson (Mackay Sugar Limited), Minter Ellison (Mossman Central Mill Company Limited)

Deal: Mackay Sugar Limited’s acquisition of the business and assets of Mossman Central Mill Company Limited

Area: Corporate

Value: $23.5 million

Key players: Lawyers Isaac West, Peter Gill and Diana Lohrisch (pictured) acted for McCullough Robertson while Bruce Cowley and Angie Clapper acted for Minters

Deal Significance: In recent times a number of foreign-owned companies have been purchasing Australian sugar assets.  This transaction involves an Australian sugar company purchasing the assets of another Australian sugar company, meaning that the Mackay and Mossman sugar businesses will remain Australian owned. There has been widespread support for this transaction in the sugar industry, particularly from cane growers. McCullough Robertson has acted for Mackay Sugar Limited for a number of years. The transaction is due to complete in June 2012.
