Firm: Maddocks

Deal: NetComm will supply distribution point units to NBN Co for use in connection with its fibre-to-the-distribution-point access technology.

Value: Undisclosed

Area: Technology

Key players: Partner Brendan Coady led the deal with assistance from partner Andrew McNee.

Deal significance:

Maddocks has advised Australian technology company NetComm Wireless on its tender to supply distribution point units and related services to NBN Co.

NetComm will supply the DPUs for NBN Co’s new fibre-to-the-distribution-point technology under the deal, expected to cover a potential footprint of 700,000 premises across the country.

“NBN Co was considering a range of international providers of the technology and I think it’s a very positive outcome that NetComm Wireless, as a leading Australian technology company, is helping with the roll-out of this groundbreaking new broadband technology,” partner and technology sector head Brendan Coady told Lawyers Weekly.

The fibre-to-the-distribution-point solution uses existing copper from the premises. The DPU connects the copper to the fibre, which Mr Coady said is generally considered to be more cost-efficient and higher quality than fibre-to-the-premises technology.

Maddocks has acted for NetComm for a number of years on key telecommunications and infrastructure transactions.

“This most recent deal builds on our collaborative relationship and we are very proud to have supported NetComm on another major NBN transaction,” said partner Andrew McNee.
