Bakers bolsters capital markets team

Baker McKenzie has brought on a new special counsel, who joins the firm’s Sydney capital markets team.

Bakers has announced Melissa Carmody as the new special counsel in capital markets. She joins the firm from Westpac Institutional Bank, where she was appointed in the global derivative legal team.

“Melissa is a fantastic addition to our team in bolstering our capacity to meet increasing client demand in both debt and equity capital markets,” said Baker McKenzie partner Duncan McGrath.

“Her global experience gained in London, Dubai and Sydney, in private practice and in-house (at Westpac and at Bank of America Merrill Lynch) will ensure that she can provide practical and commercial advice to our clients.”

Baker McKenzie head of corporate in Australia Ben McLaughlin noted the appointment of Ms Carmody furthers the firm’s capabilities in one of its key practice areas, after making a concentrated effort to hire staff with this expertise in this industry.

“Melissa joins a talented and expanding team, following senior hires such as Lauren Magraith (formerly with J.P. Morgan), Antony Rumboll (formerly UBS), Duncan McGrath (former head of Debt Capital Markets at a leading Australian law firm), Paul Anderson (US capital markets, formerly with leading Wall Street firms) and  Caroline Tait (formerly J.P. Morgan),” Mr McLaughlin explained.

“Our clients have called for us to have deeper industry experience, and we have answered that call.  We have built a team of people with hands-on financial institutions market practice.”

On joining Bakers, Ms Carmody noted the firm’s “market leading reputation” as being a significant draw card, as well as the quality of clients and matters seen by the firm.
