Area: Corporate

Key players: Corporate partner Michael Linehan and special counsel Quentin Reidy led the transaction.

Deal significance: According to a Clayton Utz statement, the charging network is Australia’s first to be powered by renewable energy.

Australian Motor Services is the commercial vehicle for Australian automobile clubs, including the NRMA, RACV, RACQ, RAC, RAA and RACT.

It has invested in, and is a major shareholder of Australian start-up Chargefox.

Chargefox will roll out 21 charging sites expected to be no more than 200 kilometres apart on interstate highways across the east coast.

Charging sites will connect major capital cities of Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane. Sites will also be located to the north and south of Perth.

The public sites will be open access for all electric vehicles currently sold in the country and motorists will be able to use the stations via an app.

CEO of Australian Motor Services Michael Reed said Australian automobile clubs want to encourage greater take-up of electric vehicles “by providing its members with access to the new charging technology,” and build on current investments to improve Australian infrastructure to help with the transition to renewable energy.

Commenting on Clayton Utz’s involvement, Mr Linehan said it was exciting to be able to advise on the “ground-breaking” transaction.

He said “the firm has had a long history of advising AMS and various [...] Automobile Clubs, so to be involved in this next major transaction is particularly pleasing.”
