Professor Simon Bronitt will take up the role, replacing recently departed Professor Joellen Riley.

Professor Bronitt joins the University of Sydney from the University of Queensland, where he has been a professor of law and deputy head and deputy dean (research) of TC Beirne School of Law.

Prior to this, he was the director of the national ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security hosted by Griffith University, and also spent 20 years at the Australian National University Law School.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Bronitt said he is “delighted to be joining one of the world’s premier law schools”.

“I hope that under my leadership the Sydney Law School continues to make significant and lasting contributions to Australia’s judiciary, politics and public life”, he continued.

Welcoming the appointment, the University of Sydney vice-chancellor and principal Dr Michael Spence said “Professor Bronitt is a distinguished scholar whose research interests include terrorism law and human rights; comparative and criminal law; covert policing; family violence and mental health policing”.

“I know the School and the wider University very much look forward to working with Professor Bronitt when he takes up his role”, Dr Spence added.

He also thanked Professor Joellen Riley for her service as head of school and dean, noting their owing of Professor Riley “an enormous debt of gratitude for all she has done at the Sydney Law School and we are extremely grateful for her visionary leadership, tenacity, generosity and commitment to excellence”.

“She has made a significant contribution to such projects as: negotiating a new Enterprise Agreement, Westmead IVF and a multitude of other committees and projects,” he said.

“I know senior university colleagues more generally and her colleagues in the School join me in wishing her well for the next phase of her career.”

“She leaves the School in very good shape,” Dr Spence continued.

Professor Cameron Stewart, the associate dean for the school’s postgraduate coursework, will serve as acting dean until Professor Bronitt’s July arrival.
