Distinguishing the difference between Australia’s CPD providers

With lawyers inundated with choices as to which provider to pick when acquiring their CPD points this year, we examine what factors make others stand out from the rest.

Speaking to Lawyers Weekly about CPD for Me’s key points of difference in comparison to other CPD providers, founder Paula Gilmour listed several factors that she believes makes her offering unique.

The ability for lawyers to access exclusive CPD content via any device 24/7 is a big drawcard, she says, as is the provider’s inclusion of PDF handouts and special speaker Q&A sessions.

Further, CPD for Me utilises LogCPD, so users are able to record their CPD activities from any provider and print a completion statement detailing their completed requirements.

“All sessions include titles, speaker bios, learning outcomes, a handout for file notes, [as well as] the ability to ask a presenter questions and rate the CPD session,” Ms Gilmour explained.

“We have put so much into the program so that all sessions have over three takeaways. And as our CPD sessions are exclusive and published on-demand, our experts make each presentation their very best.”

As a co-regulator of the profession, boasting over 29,000 members, the Law Society of NSW is also in a good position to bolster its offering in the CPD arena.

For head of professional development Cara Sleeman, it is this core membership that allows the Law Society to have an edge over its competitors.

“One of the unique features of our CPD sessions is that we know they are responsive to lawyers’ needs,” Ms Sleeman said, noting that the Society receives and pushes out regular information about legislation, case law and advocacy.

“By working closely with the Law Society’s various advocacy committees, we have curated a CPD program for lawyers with experts and topics that are relevant and useful to practising lawyers,” she added.

“Another benefit to our offering is that all our members get a discount of up to 30 per cent off CPD sessions delivered by the Law Society.”

Meanwhile, LawCPD director Sarah Mateljan suggests it’s her provider’s ability to move with the times that give it a distinct difference from others in the Australian marketplace.

“We have just launched a brand new online platform with features that make it easier for lawyers to find and complete great CPD that suits their specific needs,” she said.

“… Each online course is structured and allows you to engage with the material presented through interactive tools and quiz questions. Your progress is saved automatically as you step through each part of the course, so you can pick it up again anytime without losing your place – even if you switch from your computer to your mobile phone. The courses are designed to look great no matter which device you are using – whether it’s a mobile, tablet or desktop computer – which makes it easier to learn on-the-go.

“… Our focus has always been on innovating and using technology to deliver a better service to lawyers every year. We are excited about some great projects we have in the pipeline for the coming year to do even more in this space.”
