Magistrate Teresa O’Sullivan has become the second woman to lead the NSW Coroners Court, following in the footsteps of “trailblazer” Mary Jerram.

Attorney-General Mark Speakman announced Ms O’Sullivan’s appointment, commending her on her reputation for compassion and empathy in coronial inquiries and inquests as well as her widespread experience within the legal profession.

“Magistrate O’Sullivan’s extensive experience in criminal and coronial jurisdictions, along with her decade on the bench, have prepared her for her new appointment.”

Magistrate O’Sullivan has a 30-year legal career with roles in Legal Aid offices in NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory. She was recently practising at the Marrickville Legal Centre and has worked in child protection law in London.

She was appointed to the Local Court bench in 2009 and joined the Coroners Court in 2015. She joins five deputy state coroners, four of whom are women, at the new “state-of-the-art” Coroners Court based in Lidcombe.

“Her Honour is passionate about reducing the number of preventable deaths in NSW,” Mr Speakman said, adding that Magistrate O’Sullivan has already made a number of key recommendations aimed at improving public safety.

Magistrate O’Sullivan said she is thrilled to be elevated to the position: “I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead a dedicated team across the state who work tirelessly to improve services and outcomes for bereaved families and are committed to finding ways to prevent future tragedies.

“We work hard to make the coronial experience as positive as we can, to ensure those who have lost a loved one feel supported every step of the way.”

Magistrate O’Sullivan has been acting in the position since former state coroner Magistrate Less Mabbutt resigned in December last year. She will officially commence in her new position from Monday, July 15.
