Mr Martinez will work with partners Greg Steinepreis, Cris Cureton and David Starkoff, as well as partners in the firm’s energy and natural resources practice.

Australia managing partner Campbell Davidson noted Mr Martinez’s arrival is another step towards the firm’s strategic growth plan: “It has been our vision to expand here in Australia and to focus on areas in which we excel.

“As an in-demand litigator and arbitrator, Alexis’ arrival ‘down under’ is an indication of the quality of work on offer at the firm.”

He brings with him dual qualifications from both England and France. Alexis is an Australian registered foreign lawyer entitled to practise foreign law only.

The firm said Mr Martinez focuses on large-scale multijurisdictional disputes in addition to arbitrations, primarily in the fields of energy and investment treaties. Recent energy arbitration cases involve payments of “hundreds of millions” of US dollars to clients in several pricing disputes “under long-term natural gas and LNG contracts.”

Squire Patton Boggs added highlights of his investment treaty arbitration experiences includes representing Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Uzbekistan and other sovereign states. He has also acted for claimants against states in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia, “all of which resulted in favourable multimillion awards or settlements.”

Mr Davidson said the firm will also be drawing on the expertise of another partner hire, Cameron Ford, who joined the Singapore office. These appointments follow the hires of two senior real estate practitioners, partners Michael Swift and Mary Pringle.

“Our firm is purpose built with the modern global client in mind,” Mr Davidson said. “As trade and industry have expanded, so too has the demand for multijurisdictional dispute resolution and arbitration. We already have a number of Australian arbitrations in Singapore and we expect to see more over the coming months and years.”
