BAKER & MCKENZIE and Buddle Finlay advised CCMP Capital Asia on its acquisition of New Zealand Telecom Corporation’s Yellow Pages unit for NZ$2.24 ($2 billion).

Bakers’ partner Brendan Wykes teamed up with New Zealand law firm Buddle Finlay to advise CCMP on its purchase.

“Because it was governed by New Zealand law, we were using New Zealand lawyers as well. [But we were] advising generally on the acquisition terms, and the consortium arrangements,” said Wykes.

The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan joined CCMP in the purchase.

Baker & McKenzie also advised CCMP on its purchase of Independent Liquor New Zealand with Pacific Equity Partners last year. Wykes said this led to his firm advising on the Yellow Pages acquisition.

“[Independent Liquor] was run out of New Zealand, but there was obviously quite a big component in Australia, [and] quite a lot of business in Australia,” he said.

“So that was a good intro if you like into the New Zealand yellow pages business, which is pretty much solely based in New Zealand.”
