BAKER & MCKENZIE advised Harilela Hotels on the structured sale of its W Hotel in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, to Mumbai-based Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces.

Since Taj Hotels took over in February, the hotel has been renamed Blue Sydney.

The deal recently won the law firm the award of Deal of the Year at the Annual Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific, held in Hong Kong.

Sydney-based Baker & McKenzie partners Roy Melick and Robert Williams led the team acting on the purchase and the subsequent sale process.

“It was fantastic working with Harilela and Mark Durran of Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels on this transaction as together we’ve taken Harilela’s acquisition and disposal of this important asset full circle,” said Mellick.

“We were able to use our close working relationship with Harilela, our experience with this asset and our deep hotel industry knowledge to assist in delivering a successful result.”

In 2004, Mulpha Australia Limited’s acquisition of the Principal Hotels Group’s Australian properties (including Hayman Island, the Sheraton in Brisbane, the InterContinental Hotel in Sydney and the Airport Hilton in Melbourne) was also voted Deal of the Year. This deal was led by Sydney partners Graeme Dickson and Roy Melick.
