As of 1 January 2020, the firm will elevate nine practitioners in its insurance and health team to senior positions including two special counsel, one senior associate and six associates.

The two special counsel have been named as Andrew Ward (insurance and health, Brisbane) and Jack Geng (insurance and health, Sydney). Hannah Hughes (insurance and health, Hobart) has been promoted to senior associate.

Before joining Barry.Nilsson. in 2017, Mr Ward spent over nine years practising at other leading insurance and dispute resolution firms. He has also practised as a front-end lawyer and worked for a regulatory body.

Mr Geng joined Barry.Nilsson. in 2016 and is a commercial litigation and financial lines specialist focusing on D&O, management liability and FI/PI matters. He is regularly instructed by AFS licensees, accountants, educational institutions and registered clubs to defend a range of complex litigation matters.

Ms Hughes becomes senior associate in the insurance and health team, having joined the Hobart office in 2016. Hannah acts for a mix of insurer and insured clients. Her core area of expertise is personal injury law, including workers’ compensation workplace prosecutions and general personal injury matters.

Six new associates have also been appointed to the insurance and health teams across the country. Alex Donley and Madelaine Swan will join the Sydney office, while Alex King and Ingrid Martin are appointed to the team in Brisbane. Chanelle Blasis becomes the lone appointment in Melbourne and the Perth team will welcome Andrew Clarke.

Barry.Nilsson. managing director Don Leembruggen said the end-of-year appointments reflected strength in the sector and growing demand from insurance clients.

“These nine individuals are hugely respected by their clients and colleagues alike and I am enormously proud to be able to reward them for their hard work,” Mr Leembruggen said.

“This is a very exciting time in our firm’s history as we transition to a truly national insurance law firm. Our success has been built on a culture that supports nurturing teams of outstanding lawyers who give us our competitive edge.”

The firm now has more than 300 lawyers and legal staff including 31 principals in offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart.
