In a first for the Magistrates’ and Children’s Courts of Victoria, a new portal was created and launched as part of a broader case management system. The ongoing technology solution plan will take place over the next few years and will address the shortages for COVID-19-related delays and proactively manage any future backlogs.

The portal eDocs will create a more efficient way for court users to interact with courts in Victoria by enabling filing and management of case documents; viewing, tracking or downloading of documents; email notifications; and lodgements of payments.

Judge Lisa Hannan, the chief magistrate of the Magistrates’ Court, said its “significant” step will shape the ongoing digital transformation of both Victorian courts.

eDocs not only responds to the current COVID-19 environment, it will strive to provide us with a more effective and secure pathway for lodging and management of [hearing-related] documents in our courts,” Judge Hannan said.

The portal is the first release in the new case management solutions system that aims to replace the courts’ current, outdated systems. The new system will be the one-point of entry for all cases in the court to ensure a more efficient process.

Judge Amanda Chambers, president of the Children’s Court, said the new solution will bring “great benefits” for magistrates, staff and court users with efficient electronics.

“The eDocs portal is the first step for the new CMS and provides the ability for all court forms to be lodged electronically. It’s a fit-for-purpose technology solution that offers an improved way to interact with the court,” Judge Chambers said.
