The change will take place over roughly the next 12 months. Mr Gilbert has been a key figure at the corporate law firm since its inception in 1988.

In a recent announcement to G+T staff, Mr Gilbert, the 2018 Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards Managing Partner of the Year, stated: “For more than 30 years, I have been in the trenches every day across almost every decision about the way the firm operates. It’s time for me to think about change.”

But he went on to provide reassurances that: “I will continue to be a part of our leadership, working full time and fully committed.”

Mr Gilbert’s new role will include strategic oversight of the firm, having a key impact on recruitment, talent, and positioning in the market.

As part of his transition, Mr Gilbert announced that a new G+T managing partner would be recruited. This process will occur over the next 12 months as Mr Gilbert moves into the chairman role. Mr Gilbert indicated that the new MP would “carry the day to day responsibilities of running the firm”.

Stepping into Mr Gilbert’s role as MP of G+T will be big shoes to fill. The firm has 90-plus partners, 430 lawyers and 900 staff overall. Mr Gilbert has won several awards and was made a member of the Order of Australia in June 2005.

G+T is looking forward to considering a wide range of candidates for the MP role. But, one thing is certain, the incumbent MP will need to continue the great culture that Mr Gilbert has built with his team at G+T.

Mr Gilbert noted: “I want to ensure that all of the characteristics of the firm that have made us the success we are today, will continue and thrive.”
