The new Cash Equities Clearing and Settlement Advisory Group will focus initially on providing industry input to the CHESS replacement project, and its members will include senior industry leaders who can bring the perspective of issuers and investors as well as provide deep expertise in clearing, settlement, custody, technology, registry services and markets, ASX noted in a statement.
Mr Cameron began his legal career in the 1970s. He served as principal solicitor of the NSW Aboriginal Legal Service, chair of the NSW Law Reform Commission, Commonwealth and Defence Force Ombudsman, and national managing partner of BigLaw firm Blake Dawson Waldron (now known as Ashurst Australia).
Since then, he has also been the chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), ASX Compliance, the ASX Corporate Governance Council, Westpac Funds Management, and PEXA.
Speaking about the new group, ASX managing director and chief executive Helen Lofthouse said: “ASX is deeply committed to continuing to lift our engagement with stakeholders, and we value a constructive and collaborative working relationship with industry.
“The advisory group is a highly positive development that will help drive effective stakeholder input, including building a consensus view on the best interests of the whole market.
“The task ahead for the advisory group is both challenging and crucially important, and I am therefore delighted that Alan has agreed to take on the important role of chair.
“His deep industry experience and his consensus-building skills will be invaluable in helping this stakeholder group contribute effectively.”
The boards of ASX Clear and ASX Settlement have approved Mr Cameron’s appointment.
