The Albanese government has appointed three professors as part‑time members of the Australian Competition Tribunal (the Tribunal) for a five‑year period.
Katharine Kemp is an associate professor at the Faculty of Law and Justice at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney and leads the UNSW Public Interest Law and Tech Initiative. Her current research focuses on competition, data privacy, and consumer protection regulation and she has also practised as a commercial lawyer at Allens and as a barrister in Melbourne.
Posting on LinkedIn following her appointment, Professor Kemp said “it will be an honour and a privilege to serve on the Australian Competition Tribunal”.
Professor David Byrne and Professor Flavio Menezes have also been appointed to the Tribunal.
Professor Byrne is a Professor of Economics at the University of Melbourne and Professor Menezes is a Professor of Economics at the University of Queensland (UQ) and chair of the Queensland Competition Authority.
The Tribunal has jurisdiction under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 to hear a variety of applications, most notably reviews of determinations of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Treasurer.
According to the Honourable Dr Andrew Leigh MP, Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury and Assistant Minister for Employment, these appointments will “continue the high level of skills and experience available to the Tribunal.”
