Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has promoted four executive counsel in Australia as part of its global executive counsel promotion rounds.

Earlier this month, the firm promoted 19 new partners worldwide, including eight in Australia. These were across its private capital, energy, and digital practices, including – for the first time – the promotion of a lawyer to partner in its digital legal delivery practice.

This came after the hiring of 23 lateral partners in the current financial year, including Andrew Leadston from Corrs Chambers Westgarth (reported earlier in April), Cassandra Wee and Amit Jois from Ashurst and Johnson Winter Slattery, respectively, in October, and Jay Prasad from Allens in September.

In addition, the partnerships of both Herbert Smith Freehills and Kramer Levin – a New York City-headquartered firm with more than 300 lawyers – voted in favour of becoming “the first truly transatlantic and transpacific law firm combination” earlier this month, after the merger was first revealed in November last year. This will result in the combined firm becoming a top 20 firm globally, with approximately 2,700 lawyers, including circa 630 partners across 26 offices, and more than US$2 billion in revenue.

The four new executive counsel in Australia are Magdalena Blanch-de Wilt (corporate, Melbourne), Chevi Levin (projects, energy and infrastructure, Melbourne), Kai Low (finance, Perth), and Kristin Northway (corporate, Brisbane).

The new executive counsel assume their new roles on 1 May.

HSF Asia and Australia executive partner Kristin Stammer congratulated the executive counsel on their promotions.

“The promotions recognise the outstanding contribution of Magdalena, Kai, Kristin and Chevi to our clients, teams and firm. We are excited to be promoting our counsel and recognising their expertise in some of our key areas, including energy and infrastructure, M&A, project finance and cyber risk,” she said.

“It is a very exciting time to be stepping into a leadership role at our firm as we prepare to combine with Kramer Levin in the United States and further cement our leading market position globally.”
