NewLaw litigation firm Elit Lawyers has bolstered its insurance policyholder and conflict referral litigation practice with the addition of a new partner, who was previously a special counsel at Lander & Rogers.
Elit Lawyers has appointed Jason Chew as its newest partner in a move to strengthen its capability in insurance policyholder disputes arising in the commercial, construction and infrastructure sectors.
Chew joins from BigLaw firm Lander & Rogers, where he was a special counsel, and brings more than 14 years of legal experience to his new role. His expertise spans professional indemnity, public liability, and complex insurance coverage disputes. Chew has previously acted for insurance companies in multimillion-dollar litigation cases, involving property damage and building disputes. He also has experience as a secondee for specialist claims management company and insurer Proclaim.
“After spending years acting for large insurance companies, I wanted to shift my practice to representing policyholders who are often up against well-resourced insurers and complex processes when they make a claim. Joining Elit Lawyers offers the opportunity to work in a practice with expertise in insurance policy disputes, with a strong client-first approach that closely aligns with my own values,” Chew said.
“There’s a responsibility that comes with being entrusted with a client by another firm, especially when that firm cannot act: Elit treats that responsibility with great care. The team here runs matters with a commercial mindset but never at the expense of client experience. That matters to me and aligns with how I practise law.”
The new appointment comes as the firm grows into its fifth year. Managing partner Danielle Snell said it also comes at a time when the insurance litigation landscape has undergone some change.
“Jason brings not only outstanding litigation credentials, but an insider’s understanding of how insurers think. That combination of inside knowledge of insurer decision making and how insurers assess and deny claims is hard to come by. It allows us to critically assess and challenge declinatures of indemnity by insurers, often after policyholders have lost something deeply personal, like their home, business, or an asset they’ve spent years building,” she said.
“Five or 10 years ago, we didn’t see the level of complexity and rejection of insurance claims that we see now. Insurance claims are increasingly being declined on specific, technical grounds, particularly in commercial and property-related policies. And with the number of conflict referral cases we see, Jason fits that brief perfectly.
“Our practice remains focused on a niche area not commonly offered in larger firms. And with Jason onboard, we’re doubling down on what sets us apart: a deep bench of litigators with policy-side expertise, commercial insight, and a shared belief in getting fair outcomes for policyholders.”
