Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has named a replacement Attorney-General after Mark Dreyfus was axed last week.
Former communications minister Michelle Rowland will take over from Mark Dreyfus as Attorney-General, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday (12 May) afternoon.
Prior to joining Parliament in 2010 as the member for Greenway, Rowland worked as a senior lawyer at Gilbert + Tobin.
In the decade she worked at the firm, Rowland specialised in competition and regulation in telecommunications, media and technology.
Rowland has said telecommunications and media law, as well as her work in the communications sector, was a “great passion”.
Dreyfus was cut from Parliament when Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and factional bosses moved against him last week.
In a recent address to new graduate lawyers at the Attorney-General’s Department, Dreyfus acknowledged the “work is not always glamorous” but it was a privilege he hoped excited them.
Ed Husic, the industry minister, was also demoted.
Amanda Rishworth will become the employment and workplace relations minister, Tanya Plibersek has become the new social services minister, and Murray Watt will take on the environment portfolio.
Anika Wells was promoted to the communications portfolio, and Mark Butler has added the NDIS to his portfolio.
Jim Chalmers will retain his position as treasurer, as will Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
Albanese said he would recommend the Governor-General swear in the new ministry at 9am on Tuesday.
