The appointment of seven new magistrates has brought a combined total of 159 years of experience to the Local Court of NSW.
New magistrates Paul Blunt, Kirk Dailly, Tania Johnson, Simon Joyner, Marguerite Vassall, Ann Lambino, and Lucas Swan will serve in Local Court locations across metropolitan and regional NSW.
In announcing the appointments, Attorney-General Michael Daley said they bring a wealth of “legal expertise, compassion, integrity and a deep understanding of the communities they will serve”.
“Our Local Court magistrates make critical decisions every day that affect people’s lives, families and futures,” Daley added.
The magistrates have extensive backgrounds in police prosecution, defence, Legal Aid, community outreach and complex litigation.
Law Society of NSW president Jennifer Ball said the new appointments, as well as the five magistrates announced last December, represent “positive steps towards increasing the access to justice need of a growing population”.
Bell said she was “particularly pleased” that five of the seven incoming magistrates were members of the Law Society.
Blunt and Johnson attained specialist accreditation in criminal law, and Swan volunteered on the society’s Indigenous issues committee and on the Local Court’s specialist family violence working group.
Joyner served on the society’s criminal law and ethics committees, and Vassal was with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Dailly was a barrister of the Sixth Floor Windeyer Chambers, and Lambino was a long-serving registrar at the Coroners Court and a former associate member of the Law Society.
“I congratulate each of these accomplished legal practitioners as they embark on a new chapter in their careers,” Ball said.
