Ian Murray was named the national president of the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) for the 2025 financial year.

Murray previously led the West Australian branch as state president and is currently the medical negligence practice lead at The Law Office of Conrad Curry in Newcastle, NSW.

He obtained his legal qualifications and initially worked in the United Kingdom, but he has practised in Australia for the last decade.

Reflecting on the 30 years since the ALA was formed, Murray said the organisation’s commitment to “protecting and promoting common law rights is still as important as ever”.

“There continues to be work for us to do. Common law rights are precious, and they can be legislated away far too quickly.

“In my time as president of the ALA, I hope to work towards building a better understanding of the value of common law rights and keep our focus on making sure we retain these rights across Australia,” he said.

Murray said the ALA’s values and principles were relevant whether they were fighting for justice “for someone injured on the road or in a workplace accident, a survivor of abuse, someone in immigration detention or a person living with disabilities”.

“I am looking forward to working with my colleagues from all over the country in this national position,” Murray said.

“One of the great strengths of the ALA is our national presence and ability to learn from each other.”
