Highly experienced commercial barrister Shereef Habib SC has been appointed a judge of the District Court of NSW.
Judge Habib began his legal career in 1989 as an associate to a Federal Court judge, and he has since had three and a half decades of experience in criminal law, commercial litigation and common law.
Commenting on the appointment, Attorney-General Michael Daley said he was “delighted” to announce Judge Habib’s elevation.
“Judge Habib is a highly skilled barrister whose depth and breadth of experience will be extremely valuable to the court,” Daley said.
“I would like to congratulate Habib on this well-deserved achievement.”
From 1990, Habib worked mostly in litigation as a solicitor at Freehills, which merged in 2012 to become Herbert Smith Freehills.
Judge Habib took on a role with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in 1993 and was called to the NSW Bar in 1995.
He was appointed senior counsel in 2009.
According to his biography on Tenth Floor Chambers, Judge Habib has appeared in representative proceedings in the Supreme Court of NSW and the Federal Court of Australia.
Judge Habib also recently appeared in the High Court on behalf of the applicant for a novel question concerning the assessment of damages for the loss of use of a motor vehicle.
