Having officially begun operations in Melbourne in 1885, Maddocks this month celebrates 140 years in the legal profession.

Since Joe Maddocks and Arthur Johnson first opened the doors of what was originally known as Maddock & Johnson, the firm has grown into a national law practice with more than 700 staff – including over 95 partners – across offices in Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra.

The national law firm expanded its reach through work with local government clients – many of whom, the firm said, remain with them to this day.

By the mid-1980s, Maddocks began moving into other key practice areas, such as construction, employment, and commercial law, while continuing to grow its government advisory practice.

Through this approach, the firm doubled in size during the 1990s and attracted major corporate clients, such as Foster’s and Ansett.

Reflecting on this significant milestone, Maddocks CEO David Newman highlighted the importance of reaching 140 years and the key factors behind the firm’s longevity.

“Reaching 140 years is an incredible milestone. It is a reflection of the firm’s values, the relationships with our clients and the exceptional service we deliver, thanks to the efforts and commitment of generations of our lawyers and staff,” Newman said.

Looking ahead, Newman shared how the firm plans to build on its proud legacy – a legacy shaped by its ability to grow and adapt alongside the evolving landscape of Australia and the world.

“Across the decades, Maddocks has grown and adapted as Australia and the world has changed, while always prioritising how best to serve our clients and investing in our people. As we celebrate this milestone, we will keep building on this proud legacy,” Newman said.
