The Albanese government has appointed Luke Woodward to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Woodward has extensive experience in competition and consumer law enforcement, both at ACCC and in the private sector.

His workload included mergers and infrastructure regulation.

Most recently, Woodward was a partner at King & Wood Mallesons, where he headed up its national competition law group.

He was also a partner and head of the competition and regulation group at Gilbert + Tobin and executive general manager (compliance) and general counsel at the ACCC.

In a joint media release, Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury, Dr Andrew Leigh, and Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the appointment would strengthen the “high level of skills and experience available to the ACCC”.

Woodward will support the watchdog’s “vital role” in ensuring key sectors are effectively regulated, they added.

“This appointment will help ensure one of the nation’s most important economic institutions has the talent and expertise to remain strong and effective into the future,” the statement said.
