Global law firm K&L Gates has become one of the latest BigLaw players to roll out the AI platform Legora across its international network, with Australia emerging as the first region to implement the technology.
K&L Gates is set to roll out Legora, a collaborative artificial intelligence (AI) platform, as part of a broader strategic push to embed AI into the delivery of legal services across its global network.
The global law firm will kick off the rollout across its four Australian offices – Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney – marking the first phase of its implementation.
To support its new strategic partnership with Legora, K&L Gates confirmed it will equip its Australian lawyers with an in-person training program, initially launching in its Sydney and Melbourne offices.
The Australian rollout includes access to a range of features within the Legora platform, such as tools for structured document analysis, drafting assistance within Microsoft Word, and workflow management for legal review processes.
In a statement, the global law firm said the move reflects its drive to position itself among early adopters of formal AI governance standards, having been “one of the first law firms globally” to secure ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification.
K&L Gates is far from alone in embracing this AI platform, joining a growing wave of multinational firms – including Pinsent Masons and White & Case – that have moved to implement Legora over the past year.
Jason Opperman, regional managing partner in Australia at K&L Gates, explained that by embedding AI into daily workflows and backing it with strong governance and training, the firm is equipping itself and its clients to thrive in a rapidly AI-driven legal world.
“AI is reshaping how legal services are delivered, and our focus is on responding to that change thoughtfully and proactively,” Opperman said.
“The rollout of Legora in Australia, together with our ISO/IEC 42001:2023 AI governance certification and firmwide training programmes, reflect how seriously we take both innovation and professional responsibility.
“By embedding AI into our day-to-day work and building the right skills and frameworks around it, we’re positioning the firm – and our clients – to succeed in an increasingly AI-enabled legal landscape.”
The firm also revealed plans to explore Legora Portal as the next step, aiming to enhance secure client collaboration and streamline cross-border service delivery across the Asia-Pacific region.
Heather Paterson, VP of Legora APJ, described the firm’s Australian team as “true champions” of the AI rollout, expressing her excitement to work alongside them to embed Legora into daily workflows and pave the way for enhanced client support.
“The K&L Gates Australian team were true champions in the firm’s AI rollout,” Paterson said.
“We’re excited to work with the firm across Australia to help deploy not only Legora in its day-to-day operations, but [also] support with the rollout of Legora Portal for its clients.”
