A King’s counsel and former chair of the Victorian Legal Services Board has been made a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
Leading commercial, corporate and common law barrister Sam Hay KC has been appointed a judge, effective Tuesday, 21 April.
Justice Hay will predominantly sit in the common law division.
In his more than 20 years of experience, Justice Hay appeared in royal commissions and commissions of inquiry.
He has also served as president of the Victorian Bar Council and a member of the Victorian Legal Admissions Committee.
Prior to his appointment, Justice Hay served as chair of the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (VLSB+C) and is currently the junior vice president of the Australian Bar Association.
VLSB+C CEO Fiona McLeay said the recognition reflected not only Justice Hay’s “outstanding leadership” within the Victorian legal community but also his unwavering commitment to holding the highest ethical standards and public trust in the profession.
“Sam’s exceptional career in the law has been a tremendous asset to our board in regulating Victoria’s legal profession, and his appointment represents a significant contribution to the bench.
“Sam has led the Victorian Legal Services Board during a period that has seen a significant uplift in funding from the Public Purpose Fund to the wider legal sector, supporting high-quality service delivery, systems improvement and increased access to justice for Victorians.
“While Sam’s departure is a great loss for us, we are grateful for his leadership and wish him every success in his new role,” McLeay said.
A successor will be nominated by the Attorney-General and appointed by the Governor in Council in due course.
