The symposium will begin with a welcome from Maurice Blackburn CEO, Jacob Varghese and an address from National Head of Class Actions, Rebecca Gilsenan, who will provide an overview of the class action landscape in Australia.
We’ll then hear from keynote speaker, Federal Attorney-General, Michelle Rowland – who will follow her speech with a Q&A conducted by Deputy Editor of The Age newspaper, Mathew Dunckley.
This sets the stage for two thought-provoking panel discussions: Class actions and the Courts: The problems and opportunities of AI, the applications of competition law and GCOs; and Big Tech, Big Questions: Regulation, Accountability and the Protection of Individual Rights.

Michelle Rowland
Michelle Rowland MP is Australia’s Attorney-General, appointed in May 2025, with a background as a senior lawyer and long-serving parliamentarian who has held key communications and justice portfolios since entering Parliament in 2010.
The Honourable Richard Niall
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, appointed in 2025 following a distinguished career as Solicitor-General, appellate judge, and leader in judicial governance and legal education.
Justice Nicholas Owens
Justice Nicholas Owens is a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia, appointed in 2024, with extensive experience at the NSW Bar and as a New York attorney, including major representative proceedings.
Edward Santow
Co-Director of the Human Technology Institute, Industry Professor, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, Ed is an expert in human rights law and artificial intelligence.
