Reflecting its continued investment in key practice areas, Thomsons has promoted 70 of its lawyers, including two to partner.

The latest promotion round also saw the elevation of 10 special counsel, 22 senior associates and 36 associates across the firm, effective 1 July.

Its legal tech arm, Faculti Lawyers, has promoted Cassie Guy to principal lawyer in its resolutions, recoveries and disputes practice area. Faculti was separated into a standalone firm as part of Thomsons major rebrand.

Adrian Tembel, chief executive partner, said the promotions have occurred within practice areas where clients are “looking for depth, judgement and disciplined execution”.

New government partner Maniqa Kumar, based in Canberra, has extensive experience in advising Commonwealth agencies and statutory authorities on public law, regulatory and administrative law matters.

Kumar has a multi-sector practice spanning procurement, outsourcing and infrastructure projects and a particular focus on large-scale, complex and high-profile defence sector procurement projects.

New Perth-based litigation and dispute resolution partner Caroline Spencer has extensive experience in Corporations Act matters, construction and engineering disputes, insolvency, contract and tort claims, and misleading and deceptive conduct claims.

Spencer has a broad commercial practice, with particular expertise in complex litigation, urgent applications and contested hearings, and particular strength in disputes involving resource sector clients.

Tembel said both partners were “outstanding lawyers” and their promotions “recognise the quality of their work and the confidence we have in the continued growth of these teams”.

“Maniqa and Caroline embody our values and have consistently delivered outstanding results for clients,” Tembel added.

“We are delighted to welcome them to the partnership.”

The new special counsel are:

  • Bronte Bezzina, employment and safety
  • Divya Chaddha, construction
  • Stephanie Cogno-Magileri, real estate
  • Josh Hawes, dispute resolution
  • Tess Hemming, government
  • Alexandra Nicola, tax
  • Ira Smith-Roberts, government
  • Katherine Southwell, employment and safety
  • Clare Ward-Noonan, dispute resolution
  • Elizabeth Wreck, energy and resources

On Guy’s promotion, Tembel commended the new principal lawyer for “the depth of her experience, the strong relationships she has built with clients and her contribution to the ongoing success of Faculti Lawyers”.

“Based in Western Australia, Cassie’s promotion further strengthens and rounds out our national capability in recoveries, enforcement and insolvency, supporting clients with complex and high-volume matters across Australia.”

Guy acts for major financial institutions, government agencies, insolvency professionals and public and private organisations on contentious recovery, mortgage enforcement and insolvency assignments.

Her practice covers civil litigation across financial services disputes, mortgage and security enforcement, debt recovery and insolvency.

Guy also manages recovery actions through multiple court levels, advises on competing security and trust claims, and acts for liquidators and bankruptcy trustees in complex administrations.
