Allens Arthur Robinson has advised Australian national broadband provider NBN Co Limited on its 10-year, $1.1 billion contract with Swedish networking giant Ericsson.

Under the new deal, the two organisations will work together to roll out NBN Co's planned 12Mbps wireless network to Australian premises that won't be covered by the national fibre rollout.

The rollout of NBN Co's superfast fixed-wireless broadband network, covering Australians in rural and regional areas, is expected to be completed by 2015, with the first services to be available from the middle of 2012.

Led by partner Niranjan Arasaratnam and special counsel John Dieckmann, the Allens team worked closely with NBN Co's internal legal team, led by senior legal counsel Adrian Fung.

Arasaratnam said Allens was pleased to have advised NBN Co on a transaction of such complexity and national significance, while Dieckmann said the transaction will facilitate the efficient delivery of LTE-based broadband services to remote communities.

"It represents an important step in the deployment of the National Broadband Network," Dieckmann said.
