Salaries being frozen and the market slowing down doesn't necessarily mean that your career aspirations have to go "on hold". Your career goals can be achieved in this market if you invest time and energy now.

Planning is essential to realising success. An important first step is to review and update your resume. List what you have achieved in the past 12 months and what you hope to achieve in the next year and beyond.

Once you have your goals in place, you should identify the gaps in your expertise and address them. You could attend seminars and conferences on technical issues. You might also consider volunteer work to expose you to new experiences or further develop your commercial skills.

Undertaking further study is a great way to enhance your skills. Many in-house lawyers are completing the Graduate Diploma in Company Secretarial Practice, a Master of Laws or an MBA.

If you spend a little time reflecting on your career strategy now, you will be well placed to advance your career in the future.
