Daniel Bell has been promoted to general counsel from his previous role as acting general counsel for the University of Newcastle, a role he’s held since mid-2018.

The appointment of Mr Bell comes after “an extensive executive search process” which ultimately determined he was the best person to lead the university’s legal function.

“During Daniel’s time at the university he has worked across all aspects of the legal function and has always achieved excellent outcomes,” a statement from UoN said.

“Some of his recent achievements include advising on the planning and construction of NeW Space, the contractual arrangements for the new Central Coast Medical School at Gosford, negotiating a joint venture agreement with the NUW Alliance and advising on various successful disputes in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.”

During his time as acting general counsel, Mr Bell has also made some noteworthy changes to the way the legal function operates, the statement noted.

This includes “focusing on service experience with an emphasis on relationship management; implementing a triage system that prioritises workflow according to strategic initiatives and business impact; and recruiting legal counsel with specialist expertise aligned to future organisational requirements”.

“Daniel is committed to aligning the legal office to the strategic needs of the university and continuing to build strong relationships both internally and within the greater community,” it said.

“His appointment will help to ensure continued strong leadership of our legal function.”
