The University of Melbourne has appointed Professor Carolyn Evans as dean of Melbourne Law School, replacing Professor Crommelin effective 1 February 2011.

Evans' appointment follows an exhaustive international and national search which yielded an impressive shortlist of candidates.

As a Professor in the Melbourne Law School, Evans has a reputation as an excellent teacher with an international research profile.

"She is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost experts on the freedom of religion or belief and the relationship between law and religion," said vice-chancellor Glyn Davis.

The former Rhodes Scholar is also the author of Religious Freedom under the European Court of Human Rights and co-author of Australian Bill of Rights: The Law of the Victorian Charter and the ACT Human Rights Act.

In 2010, Evans was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship which has allowed her to travel as a visiting fellow to American and Emory Universities to examine questions of comparative religious freedom.

She also researches on the area of domestic protection of human rights, particularly the role of parliament in the protection of human rights.
