Baker & McKenzie announced this month the election of Eduardo Leite as the next global chairman of the firm's executive committee. Leite's appointment will commence after the firm's annual meeting in Chicago on 20 October.

An energy, infrastructure projects and mergers and acquisitions lawyer based in Sao Paulo, Leite currently heads the firm's global, mining and infrastructure practice group and since 2003, has been the managing partner of the four offices in Brazil.

Leite will succeed John Conroy, who is concluding his second term as chairman after having served on the firm's executive committee since 1998. Leite served alongside Conroy on the firm's executive committee from 1999 to 2003 and he chaired the firm's policy committee in 2005. Fluent in three languages, Leite also spent several years working in the firm's Chicago and Miami offices.

"I'm honoured and humbled to have been selected by my colleagues around the world to become the next chairman of the executive committee of Baker & McKenzie," Leite said.

"I am also fortunate to assume this new role when the firm is financially strong and competitively well-positioned. Our unparalleled global platform of offices, practices and expertise makes us a natural match for the business and legal needs of companies in all sectors at a time when global economies are increasingly interdependent."
