DibbsBarker has announced 19 promotions across its Sydney and Brisbane offices.

Amongst those appointed were financial services lawyer Gary Koning, who was made partner, and insurance lawyer Matthew Seisun, who was made special counsel.

Managing partner Alan McArthur said the appointments reflect the continuing strategy of the firm since it split, three years ago, with Dibbs Abbot Stillman.

In Sydney, four lawyers were appointed to senior associate and 10 were made associate, while three were promoted in Brisbane.

McArthur said that, especially with the nationalisation of the profession, he is not looking to divide expertise between capitals.

"The whole idea is geography shouldn't matter, in these sorts of businesses you've got to maximise utilisation of your people," he said, adding that the firm has tried to build its specialisation across the whole business.

"It's one team, we build our focus and our market and the geography doesn't matter," he said.

The firm's principle growth areas are around property, infrastructure, renewable energy, IP and medical/pharmaceutical health, with coal mining and renewable work predominantly in Queensland.

"Parts of the business will evolve in a particular way around the geography but we're trying to avoid a geographic focus and just see the firm as one operation," said McArthur.
