A TASMANIAN LAWYER is the new president of the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA).

A partner in the Hobart office of law firm Dobson Mitchell & Allport, Steve Knight was the founder and inaugural chairman of the Tasmanian branch of AILA and joined the national board in 1995 as the first Tasmanian board member. AILA is an organisation dedicated to the advancement of insurance law education and knowledge.

The first Tasmanian president of AILA, Knight was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1982 and is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of Australia.

Outside work, the AILA said last week, Knight skippers a traditional Huon pine yacht, Gypsy, which was built in 1914 and has been in the Knight family since 1919.

Knight chairs the Australian Wooden Boat Festival Inc, which organises a biennial festival in Hobart. This year’s festival attracted 450 wooden boats and about 40,000 people from all parts of the globe.
