Legal luminary Michael Kirby (pictured) will present the inaugural Michael Kirby Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards.

The Awards will be held in Melbourne on Friday 27 July, with the former High Court judge and current member of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group on hand to present the evening’s showcase prize.

The Awards will showcase individual excellence in the profession over 12 categories. Other awards include the Managing Partner Award, Dealmaker Award, Senior Associate Award, Corporate Counsel Award and Law Student Award.

Michael Kirby will also be in Melbourne on 2 March as the guest speaker at the 2012 Dame Roma Mitchell Memorial Lunch.

Kirby will be addressing the topic of equality for same sex couples at the lunch at Zinc in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Adelaide-born Dame Roma Mitchell was the first Australian woman to be appointed as a judge and a Queen’s Counsel. She died in 2000 at the age of 86.
