QUEENSLAND IS setting standards the rest of Australia should pay close attention to, the State’s government suggested last week. Apparently, the Sunshine State has among the most effective and cost-efficient courts in the whole country.
The report shows that the State’s Higher Courts are finalising criminal cases at a rate ahead of national averages, a credit to the Chief Justice, the Chief Judge, judges and the staff who work on those courts. “This sort of performance is the cornerstone of an effective justice system,” said Welford.
According to the report, only Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania’s Supreme Courts kept up with their workload or reduced their pending caseload.
In the District Court for both criminal and civil matters, Queensland and NSW were the only two jurisdictions with a clearance rate of 100 per cent.
