HAVING HANDED his presidency of the Law Council of Australia to John North, Steve Southwood QC this week took up his post as the newest Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.

Southwood said he is looking forward to sitting on the other side of the bench. He is expected to face a job “full of challenges”, said Minister for Justice, Dr Peter Toyne. But Southwood would meet them all with “his expertise, passion and commitment”, Toyne said.

Southwood has held other prominent positions in his career, including vice president of the Northern Territory Bar Association and president of the NT Law Society. He commenced practice at the Northern Territory Bar in 1990 and was appointed Queens Counsel on 30 November 2000.

Southwood was sworn in at the official start of the Northern Territory legal year on Monday. He replaces Justice Steve Bailey who passed away late last year.
