“MALAYSIA’S MOST famous political prisoner”, according to event organisers, will this year join a list of prominent speakers to address the upcoming LAWASIAdownunder2005 conference in Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was jailed for nearly six years in 1999, but set free last year after his conviction was overturned. Ibrahim has always asserted that the charges laid against him were politically motivated.

Accompanied by his lead counsel, Ibrahim will speak at the session entitled ‘Law and Politics’, joined by other keynote speakers including East Timor’s Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta, ASIO Director-General Dennis Richardson, Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks’ lawyer Stephen Kenny and award-winning Pacific correspondent and journalist Sean Dorney.

Lawyers Weekly will be giving full coverage to LAWASIAdownunder2005, to be held at the new Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from 20-24 March.
