THE LAW Council of Australia (LCA) this week sent the only independent Australian legal expert to Guantanamo Bay to observe the first hearing in the military trial of David Hicks.

The nominated observer, Melbourne barrister Lex Lasry QC, will attend the hearing in Cuba. He last week acknowledged the importance of the role handed to him. “Attending the hearing is an important responsibility which I’m pleased to accept and I look forward to fulfilling the obligations of my role in Guantanamo Bay,” he said.

LCA president-elect, Steve Southwood, celebrated the appointment of Lasry, who he said is an “excellent choice” given his experience in criminal law. “He will be drawing on this experience to provide the Law Council with a detailed report on the hearing which we will make publicly available,” he said.

See this weeks News Review for more details on Lasrys observation of Hicks hearing.
