MALLESONS STEPHEN JAQUES’ new chief executive partner, Robert Milliner, will make the firm’s push into the Chinese market one of the priorities of his recent appointment. Milliner, who took over from Tony D’Aloisio earlier this week, is a former managing partner, international, with two years’ experience in Hong Kong.

Mallesons aims “to develop our international credentials with a view to becoming the pre-eminent firm in the Asia Pacific,” he told Lawyers Weekly, adding that his experience in the Hong Kong market would assist implementation of the firm’s international strategy.

He cautioned, however, that he had not been appointed only to lead the push into the Hong Kong/China market, “totally devoid of what’s happening in the domestic market”.

Milliner also said Mallesons was unlikely to include making inroads into the European or US legal markets in the firm’s plans for international expansion. “It is hard to justify the sort of investment that would need,” he said.
