INCOMING WA Law Society president Ian Weldon has flagged stabilising arrangements for professional indemnity insurance as a priority when he takes office on 1 January. Weldon said that for the past two years, the society has faced the possibility of being unable to obtain satisfactory insurance, adding that the legislation provides no guidance on what should be done were the society to be unable to do so.
Weldon, a barrister, is also set to oversee the introduction of the legal practice bill currently making its way through the WA Parliament. The legislation will authorise for the first time both multidisciplinary and incorporated legal practices as well as implementing compulsory CLE. New regulations should leave the society as a “significant provider” but not a monopoly provider of CLE services.
