I attended the University of Queensland’s beautiful St Lucia campus. During my time there, I was uncertain enough about the idea of a life spent in law that I hedged my bets with an honours year in finance, so that I’m apparently now Australia’s best and only authority on something called the “international conditional consumption CAPM”. I was worried law might be disproportionately concerned with research and back-office work, particularly in the junior years. My hope was that it would bring me into contact with a wider range of subject matter than most other office jobs. The last part has certainly been proven true: depending on the day of the week, I ride in light aircraft, visit country towns, put on my best jacket and go to court or put on my RMs and visit construction sites. Needless to say, law is quite different from my university expectations. If you had a bad experience with a subject at university, keep an open mind; unless we’re talking about tax, it’s probably a lot more interesting in practice.
