Eversheds managing partner Desmond Ong says he has his sights set on the talent potential in Australia, after opening the international firm's first Singapore office this week.

Ong crossed from the position of managing partner of Philips Fox to join Eversheds, bringing a number of DLA lawyers with him to build the new office.

From Singapore, and against the current trend of law firms across the globe, Ong said he was determined to grow the office over the next 12 months. "While numbers are not the guide, we are looking to hit a dozen lawyers by the end of the year," Ong told Lawyers Weekly.

Of particular interest, added Ong, is recruiting Australian and New Zealand-qualified lawyers.

"One of the things I will be raising will be to look to our Australian and New Zealand cousins in recruiting from those markets, or doing work that faces that direction," he said. "I see it as a benefit in terms of building an Australian presence."

Eversheds already has an existing Asian presence in Shanghai, and a third office in Hong Kong is scheduled to open later this year.

A spokesperson from Eversheds told Lawyers Weekly that the new Singapore office was a positive move in view of the current economic crisis, particularly with many UK and international firms now in the process of cutting staff globally.

Eversheds now has 41 offices in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
