The New South Wales Government announced on Friday additional funding of $500,000 for Legal Aid (NSW) and the Consumer Credit Legal Service to expand their services in relation to mortgage stress.

The funds will enable four solicitors and one financial counselor to be employed.

Tanya Plibersek, Federal Minister for Housing and the Status of Women, said the service could make the difference between a person keeping or losing their home.

"We want to be able to reach out to as many people as possible. The numbers of repossessions in the last couple of years have more than doubled. We've got the repossession rates going up by about 320 each month," she said.
