The Australian Federal Police's new commissioner Tony Negus will be officially sworn on Monday at an official ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra.

Negus, who is replacing former commissioner Mick Keelty who retired last week, is only the sixth person to lead the AFP.

He has been a member of the AFP for 27 years and was awarded the Australian Police Medal in 2005.

Appointed as deputy commissioner operations in 2007, Negus had been responsible for high tech crime operations, border activities and international deployment.

As the top cop, he will preside over a staff of more than 6,500 and a budget of just over $1 billion.
