Chris Jenkins of engineering group Uhde Shedden has been awarded the second annual Freehills Innovation Award in Chemical Engineering.

Jenkins was presented with the award and the $5000 prize, given by the chemical engineering association's IChemE, the Institute of Engineers and the Royal Association of Chemical Institute, at the recent Chemeca 2009 conference in Perth.

He was selected for his development of novel technology in petrochemicals, methanol synthesis and syngas processes, and his work in offshore oil and gas, chemicals and coal-to-liquids projects in Australia.

Freehills Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys partner Brett Connor congratulated Jenkins, saying he was a role model for young chemical engineers and graduates.

"Freehills is proud to recognise Chris Jenkins and the significant role chemical engineers play in innovation and the creation of valuable intellectual property," he said.

He also emphasised the important role of IP protection in the chemical engineering field. "We want to encourage chemical engineers through this award to capitalise on their innovation through effective IP protection strategies, as this is often a missed opportunity for them and their employers to gain a sustainable competitive advantage over their competitors."
