Following today's shock departure of Malcolm Turnbull from the Liberal leadership, Slater & Gordon lawyer Steven Lewis has announced his interest in running as the Labor candidate for Turnbull's marginal seat of Wentworth.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, Lewis - who heads up Slater's commercial litigation team - said the seat was "very winnable".

Turnbull confirmed to the SMH today that he won't be leaving politics and, therefore, forcing a byelection in the seat, but he has not decided whether or not he will stand for another term.

Once considered a blue ribbon Liberal seat, Wentworth - which now stretches from the wealthier suburbs of Vaucluse and Rose Bay to parts of the Labor-voting suburbs of Darlinghurst and Kings Cross - could be up for grabs by Labor. However, the SMH noted, at the last election Turnbull was the only candidate in a Liberal-held seat to increase his margin (from 2.5 per cent to 3.9 per cent).
