The Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme has been defeated in the Senate for the second time today, providing a trigger for a double dissolution.

Despite two Liberal senators - Victorian Judith Troeth and Queenslander Sue Boyce - breaking ranks and joining Labor in support, the Government lost the vote with 33 in support and 41 against, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.

Joining the Liberals in voting against the scheme were the Nationals, Greens, Family First and independent senators.
