Ian Govey has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of the Australian Government Solicitor (AGS), Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland announced Monday.

Govey has had a longstanding involvement with the AGS with extensive knowledge of the organisation gained through his supervision of legal services to government and as the inaugural head of the Office of Legal Services Coordination in 1997.

He has been deputy secretary of the Civil Justice and Legal Services Group of the Attorney-General's Department since 2000, and, over the course of his career, has held various legal and legal policy positions across government, including his role as counsellor (legal) in the Australian Embassy in Washington DC.

"I congratulate Mr. Govey on his appointment and I am confident that under his leadership, the Australian Government Solicitor will continue to be a high quality provider of legal services to Government," McClelland said.
